Police have commenced a comprehensive investigation into the death of Reverend Father Samuel Opeyemi, whose lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of Kogi State Command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, operatives were mobilised to the scene following a report, where the body was recovered and evacuated it to the hospital.
A medical doctor subsequently certified the victim dead, and the body was deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The deceased was later identified as Reverend Father Samuel Opeyemi of St. Paul Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area.
In view of the circumstances surrounding the incident, Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Lokoja, for a thorough and discreet investigation.

The command stated that the SCID team has been tasked with unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death, identifying all persons connected to the crime, and ensuring those culpable are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Police Command has appealed to members of the public to remain calm and refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information capable of prejudicing ongoing investigations.
The Command assured the family of the deceased, the Catholic faithful, and the general public that no effort will be spared in ensuring justice is served, promising to provide regular updates as investigators pursue all available leads.
