Former Heartland FC defender Chinedu Ozor has died after suffering a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly between Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes in Katsina.

Ozor collapsed during the match and was initially pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital.

In a dramatic turn of events, the 32-year-old reportedly showed signs of movement after he had been taken to the mortuary and was immediately returned to Katsina General Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care and put on oxygen as doctors battled to stabilise him.

Despite the renewed hope surrounding his condition, Ozor has now passed away, with his former club Heartland FC confirming his death in an emotional tribute.

Heartland described Ozor as a player who fought courageously for his life, saying he had “fought the good fight” before his journey came to an end.

Ozor spent the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons with the Owerri-based Naze Millionaires and was also previously on the books of Katsina United.

He had earlier played for Abia Warriors, Lobi Stars and Sunshine Stars before joining Kano Pillars.

His death has sent shockwaves through Nigerian football, coming just days after he joined Katsina United as the club prepared for the new NPFL season.

Heartland FC said Ozor would forever be remembered for the memories he created and the impact he made during his time at the club.
