Nigeria’s capital market is being challenged to look beyond funds raised and ensure investments translate into economic growth, jobs and improved living standards.
The President of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Fiona Ahimie, says its success must be measured by its impact on businesses, infrastructure and wealth creation.
She spoke at the Institute’s conference in Lagos, themed “From Capital Mobilised to Prosperity Realised,” which brought together market operators, regulators and government representatives to explore ways of strengthening investor confidence and financing Nigeria’s economic growth.
For Nigeria to achieve sustainable economic growth, funds raised through the capital market must deliver measurable economic benefits.
This was the central message at the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers’ conference in Lagos, where CIS President Fiona Ahimie called for investments to translate into jobs, business growth and improved living standards.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the state raised N230 billion through bonds in November 2025 and another N215 billion last month.
NGX Group Chairman, Umaru Kwairanga; the Vice President’s representative, Tope Fasua; and the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission said Nigeria’s capital market had recorded significant growth, with market capitalisation exceeding N162 trillion.
The Federal Government says a strong capital market is key to achieving a one-trillion-dollar economy.
