Civil society mourns death of activist, Innocent Chukwuma

Nigeria’s foremost and unrepentant believer in police reforms and civil society activist, Innocent Chukwuma is dead.

His death was confirmed in a statement signed on behalf of the family by former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu.

Chukwuma who was until recently, the Regional Representative for Ford Foundation in West Africa died of end stage Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in Lagos on Saturday night.

The 55-year old activist is survived by his wife, Josephine and 3 daughters.

In a tribute, Executive Director of the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education, CHRICED, Dr Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi said the late Innocent Chukwuma remained a consistent voice in the pre-1999 days and thereafter, as he made valiant efforts to rallying Nigerians to demand for democratic accountability and participatory governance.

Chukwuma will be remembered for his indelible footprints in the thematic issues of electoral and security sector reforms. He had a stint at the Civil Liberty Organisation, CLO, and played leading roles in the Transition Monitoring Group, TMG, and Centre for Law Enforcement Education, CLEEN Foundation.
