Combating Oil Theft : Fed.Govt. launches Operation Octopus Grip

In a determined effort to consolidate on previous gains and to eliminate new threats arising from the activities of oil thieves in the Niger Delta, the Federal Government has launched a military exercise, code-named ‘Operation Octopus Grip’

Speaking through a representative at the flagoff ceremony in Nembe, Bayelsa State, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor said ‘Operation Octopus Grip’ comes with a new mandate for security personnel to be more ruthless and decisive in dealng with people caught engaging in crude oil theft.

Despite the success of the Nigerian military, particularly, the Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe in combating the
activities of oil thieves, renewed acts of vandalism and illegal refining in the Niger Delta has led to significant cuts in the country’s oil production.

Major General Adeyemi Yekini on behalf of the the Chief of Defence Staff, Launches the military exercise ‘Operation Octopus Grip’ at the NDDC jetty in Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State to aggressively deal with the emerging threat.

He said with the launching of the exercise, security personnel have been authorized to show oil thieves no mercy.

According to the military authorities, the exercise will last for 90 days and would compliment other anti-oil theft operations such as DAKARTAR DA BARAWO’.
