Some residents of Kano State in North-West Nigeria have kicked against government’s plan to borrow N15 billion to fund its free education policy.
Those who spoke to AIT queried why the State Government would borrow such huge amount of money to give free education at a time private schools are enjoying patronage from key government officials.
Others however commended the action of government saying free and compulsory education is key to development.
According to the request sent to the Kano State House of Assembly by the State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and read by the Speaker Abdulazeez Gafasa, the decision to access the loan was to enable the local governments ensure the success of the free and compulsory education policy.

This decision did not go down well with some residents of the State who advised the government not to borrow for an education policy that is not enforceable.
If the loan is approved by the 40-member Assembly each of the 44 local councils will get N340 million for the free and compulsory education programme.
