DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Nigeria’s emergency management system is set to receive a boost with the unveiling of a real-time disaster data collection platform by the Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Risk Management Institute.

At the annual Emergency Response and Simulation Summit in Abuja, stakeholders say the platform could help bridge critical gaps in disaster response by improving access to reliable information and strengthening coordination among emergency agencies.

The summit is focused on strengthening collaboration among response agencies, building the capacity of emergency personnel and using simulation exercises to test how prepared responders are for different disaster situations.

With the theme, “Strengthening Resilience Through Data-Driven Emergency Response and Simulation,” a major highlight of the summit is the introduction of a real-time disaster data collection platform.

The platform is designed to capture critical information during and after disaster situations, including human casualties, property damage, economic losses and other emerging needs.

For the institute, the initiative is an attempt to address one of the persistent challenges in Nigeria’s disaster management system — the lack of reliable, accessible and verified data, and real-time information gathering to enable authorities respond to disasters more effectively.

And beyond responding to emergencies as they occur, the institute says documenting reliable data from each disaster will help authorities understand what went wrong, identify gaps and build better preparedness for future emergencies.
