Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that he will retire from international football after the November international break, bringing a record-breaking 23-year career towards its close.
The 41-year-old has made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for Portugal, holding the men’s international records in both categories. He could still add to those totals before his departure.
Ronaldo made his international debut in 2003 and went on to represent Portugal at six World Cups and six European Championships.
His greatest team success came in 2016, when Portugal won the European Championship for the first time, despite their captain being forced off through injury during the final against France.
He also helped his country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, cementing his place among Portugal’s most influential footballers.
His international journey also brought disappointments, including defeat in the Euro 2004 final on home soil and the failure to win a World Cup.
The retirement announcement follows a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp without permission in September, later citing broken promises from the coach.
Jesus denied making any agreement with the striker. Ronaldo subsequently apologised and made himself available for selection, but the Portuguese Football Federation suspended him for 30 days and imposed a fine.
Despite the controversy surrounding his recent international appearances, Ronaldo leaves a remarkable sporting legacy.
His goals established a world record, while his leadership helped Portugal secure three major senior trophies. He also became the first player to score at six World Cups.
As Portugal prepares for a new era, the challenge will be to build a team capable of sustained success without its most celebrated player.
Ronaldo will continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
