Cross River State

Cross River State and its development partners have renewed their commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery, improving accountability and accelerating progress towards Universal Health Coverage across the state.

The commitment was reaffirmed at the end of a two-day Joint Annual Review meeting in Calabar, where stakeholders assessed implementation of the 2026 Annual Operational Plan and outlined strategic priorities for the 2027 health planning cycle.

The review meeting focused on a question that affects millions of residents: how to ensure that primary healthcare centres function more effectively, health programmes deliver measurable results and more families can access quality healthcare without financial hardship.

Stakeholders reviewed performance across immunisation, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, nutrition, health insurance, non-communicable diseases, health security and citizen engagement, while identifying areas requiring stronger coordination and investment.

Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, says recent reforms are intended to improve regulation, strengthen access to essential medicines, expand insurance coverage and support evidence-based planning across the sector.

Other stakeholders also reviewed the role of data in planning and monitoring health programmes, with attention to improvements in electronic reporting and data quality assurance.

At the end of the exercise, stakeholders adopted recommendations aimed at strengthening programme coordination, improving resource mobilisation, enhancing monitoring and sustaining collaboration across the sector.
