Covid -19

A confirmed case of COVID-19 in Cross River State, South-South Nigeria has triggered an immediate public health response, with authorities ramping up surveillance and urging residents to avoid crowded gatherings.

The index case involves a Chinese national working with Lafarge in Akamkpa local government area of the state, who reportedly arrived in the country about a month ago before testing positive.

State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, who spoke during a media briefing held at the State Ministry of Health in Calabar, said there is no cause for alarm, assuring residents that the situation is under control and being effectively managed.

Despite the reassurance, Dr Ayuk said the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre has been activated, with a Rapid Response Team already deployed to Akamkpa to monitor the situation and contain any possible transmission.

Also speaking, the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Blessing Inyang, notes that Covid-19 remains a public health concern, confirming that contact tracing has commenced to identify and manage all possible contacts.

Residents are being advised to avoid crowded gatherings, maintain proper hygiene, and strictly observe all preventive protocols to stay safe.

While the case is being effectively managed, officials say continued vigilance and adherence to preventive guidelines will determine the state’s ability to contain the virus.
