As partial closure of Nigeria’s land borders continues, officials of the national border drill operation have intercepted over 50 trucks of dates and tiger nuts in Katsina state.

According to the sector 4 co-ordinator of the border operation, Comptroller Mohammed Aliyu, the 51 trucks and a bus were arrested on Jibia – Katsina road.

Comptroller Aliyu said the trucks and a bus will be impounded until after a thorough examination was carried out to clear them of any suspected concealment.

The coordinator who said the arrests were a combined effort of officials of border drill, federal operations unit, strike force and Katsina state command of the Nigeria customs service, added that the result of the examination will determine what further step will be taken.

On behalf of owners of the intercepted goods, Auwalu Danbatta said they will continue to be law-abiding citizens and will never indulge in anything contrary to the laws of the land in the course of their businesses.

There have been divergent views by Nigerians on the advantages and disadvantages of the Federal Government’s decision to keep the land borders partially closed citing insecurity and influx of foreign goods as some of the reasons.
