The Diphtheria outbreak in Zamfara State has claimed five additional lives, bringing the death toll to 44.

This is up from the initial figure of 39 one week after.

Health authorities say 367 cases are currently being managed across 44 wards and 440 designated segments in the 10 local government areas affected by the disease.

The latest figures were disclosed during a meeting of the Diphtheria Rapid Response Team at Zamfara State Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHEOC) in Gusau, the state capital.

The Rapid Response Team met to receive updates from the designated wards and assess developments across the 440 segments identified for disease-risk management.

Health authorities identify cultural beliefs and misconceptions about diphtheria, alongside gaps in routine immunisation in the past, as some of the major challenges affecting efforts to contain the outbreak.

To address these challenges, authorities say community sensitisation, dialogue and risk-communication activities are being intensified.

Mass media platforms are also being used to create awareness and encourage affected communities to seek timely medical attention and embrace immunisation as the state continues its response to the increasing cases.
