Over 80% of diphtheria-related fatalities have been recorded in Kano State. These involve individuals who had not received the vaccination.
The victims were primarily aged between 5 and 14 years.
The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Faisal Shu’aib, said this shortly after inspecting the Diphtheria Treatment Centre at Murtala Muhammad General Hospital in Kano.

Dr Shu’aibu added that diphtheria has a significant impact in Nigeria, with more than 14,000 reported cases of the disease, of which Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Borno, and Yobe States were responsible for 97%
