The Enugu State Government has dismissed reports of a confirmed case of diphtheria in the state, describing the publications as unfounded rumours.
The clarification follows reports of a suspected case at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla.
The State Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, said the suspected case was promptly followed up by the state health team.
He explained that further diagnosis did not confirm diphtheria, as the patient was found to have tonsillitis.
The Commissioner urged residents not to panic over unverified reports, assuring them that the Enugu State health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will respond appropriately to any confirmed threat.
