Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has opposed the proposed realignment of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway with the East–West Road, while reaffirming his support for the coastal highway project.
Diri said South-South governors were united in supporting the project but disagreed with the realignment.
He spoke on Thursday during the weekly State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa.
Governor Douye Diri says his disagreement with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, concerns the proposed realignment of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway with the East–West Road.
Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting, Diri reaffirmed his support for the coastal highway and said other South-South governors shared his position.
Diri also criticised remarks made by former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke during a television interview.
He expressed disappointment at Duke’s criticism of the project, describing him as a “jester” and a politician without a political base.
Diri said the coastal highway would improve connectivity and open up economic opportunities for states and riverine communities along its route.
The planned 750-kilometre highway is intended to connect nine coastal states, linking Lagos to Cross River.
