Media practitioners are calling on the Federal Government to declare October 25 as Nigeria’s Private Broadcasting Day in honour of late independent broadcasting pioneer, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

The call was renewed during the 2026 Raymond Dokpesi Endurance Trek in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria organised to celebrate his contributions to private broadcasting and sustain his legacy in Nigeria’s media industry.

The annual trek, themed “Raymond Dokpesi: The Colossus and Pathfinder of Broadcasting in Nigeria,” brought together media practitioners and admirers to celebrate the man whose vision transformed the country’s broadcasting landscape.

Director General of the Raymond Dokpesi Centre for Media Development, Christopher Ebuetse, says the initiative seeks to preserve Dokpesi’s contributions to broadcasting and promote professional media practice.

Dokpesi established Raypower 100.5 FM in 1994, Nigeria’s first private radio station, before launching Africa Independent Television, AIT in 1996, expanding the reach of independent broadcasting.

Ebuetse urged the Federal Government, media organisations and other stakeholders to support the campaign for October 25 to be officially recognised as Nigeria’s Private Broadcasting Day.

Participants also highlighted Dokpesi’s impact on sports broadcasting, entertainment and the promotion of Nigerian and African creative industries to international audiences.

Media practitioners are seeking official recognition of October 25 as Nigeria’s Private Broadcasting Day in honour of Raymond Dokpesi, whose pioneering investments helped shape private radio and television broadcasting in the country.
