ECOWAS Summit: VP Shettima Arrives Freetown, Sierra Leone for 69th meeting of Heads of State, Government

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Senator Shettima was received on arrival at the Freetown International Airport, Lungi, by Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.

Also on hand to receive him were Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Ayo Luther-Ogbomode.

Other senior officials present included the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Gas, Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Ambassador Olawale Emmanuel Awe, and other officials of the Nigerian High Commission in Freetown.

The Vice President will now join fellow Heads of State, Ministers, Regional Institutions and Business Leaders at the summit.

The meeting is holding today, July 19, 2026, at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre.

The summit is part of ECOWAS’ mid-year statutory engagements focused on security, democratic governance, trade, infrastructure and sustainable development.

Leaders are expected to take major policy decisions and strategic resolutions to strengthen peace and security, deepen democratic governance, boost regional trade, infrastructure development, and drive sustainable growth across Africa.
