A new leadership has emerged at the Edo State House of Assembly, with the member representing Akoko-Edo Constituency One, Yekini Idiaye elected as Speaker of the Eighth Assembly.

The leadership change followed the resignation of former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, who was subsequently suspended by the House pending investigations into allegations of corruption.

Monday’s sitting, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonyi Atu, began with the acknowledgment of the resignation of the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, reportedly on personal grounds.

Following the resignation, the member representing Esan South-East Constituency, Sunday Ojiezele, nominated Yekini Idiaye as Speaker.

The nomination was seconded by the member representing Owan East Constituency, Eric Okaka.

In his acceptance speech, the new Speaker accused his predecessor of poor leadership and alleged that he was involved in corrupt practices.

Idiaye says the allegations will be thoroughly investigated, while announcing his suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.

The former Speaker expressed appreciation to the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo for what he described as a cordial working relationship.

The House also approved changes in its leadership, with Sunday Ojiezele emerging as Majority Leader and Eugene Inegbebor, representing Igueben Constituency, as Deputy Majority Leader.

Natasha Osawaru was equally confirmed as Minority Leader, following her nomination by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.
