The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed through second reading the bill seeking to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission.
The bill, if passed, will convict any candidate, person, or agent who destroys ballot box or papers during an election for a jail term of 20 years.

The bill sponsored by the Senator representing Borno North, Abubakar Kyari, generated a chain of arguments from lawmakers who believe that what the country needs is an independent tribunal and not a commission.
20 years of imprisonment has also been proposed for judicial officers who prevent electoral justice.
