As part of efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote recycling, environmental activists have staged an arts-driven campaign to promote environmental awareness and encourage action towards cleaner, plastic-free communities.
The campaign, which featured music, poetry, film screenings and stage performances, held at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos, and extended to several communities and secondary schools across the state.
It is another phase of the Arts for Environmental Community Awareness Campaign in Lagos, an initiative of Kreative Arts for Community Empowerment, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and tackling plastic pollution through creative arts.
The campaign brought together music, film screenings, stage plays, poetry, dance drama and practical activities at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba.
Through these creative expressions, participants were educated on the dangers of plastic pollution, the importance of recycling and the need for responsible waste management.
Founder of Kreative Arts for Community Empowerment, Ambassador Willie Workman Oga, says the initiative focuses on three key thematic areas: the three Rs of waste management — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle; the impact of plastic pollution on the environment, waterways and human health; as well as tree planting and peacebuilding.
Supported by the Global Greengrants Fund, the programme also featured the Ecozone Club Environmental Reporters Award, recognising individuals for their contributions to environmental advocacy.
Among the award recipients was the founder of KafComE, Ambassador Willie Workman Oga, who received the Award of Excellence in Environmental Leadership.
Beyond the activities at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, the campaign extended to communities including Ifako-Oworonshoki and Monkey Village, as well as several secondary schools across Lagos.
The outreach exposed women, young people and students to practical environmental education, using creative platforms to encourage climate awareness, recycling and environmental conservation.
