For many Lagos State residents frustrated by estimated electricity bills, relief may soon be on the way.
This is as the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has backed new reforms by the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission aimed at improving transparency and protecting consumers.
The reforms include compulsory metering from 2026, phased deployment of smart meters, stricter monitoring of distribution companies, and penalties for operators who fail to comply.
FCCPC Chief Executive, Tunji Bello, says the move is a major step towards ending one of the biggest complaints from electricity consumers, estimated billing, while also improving trust and service delivery in the power sector.
