The European Union has urged security agencies to make the protection of persons with disabilities a central part of preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, said disability inclusion must guide security planning, personnel training and emergency response.
Speaking at a high-level engagement with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mignot stressed the need to incorporate the safety and needs of persons with disabilities into election security arrangements.
The Chairman of The Albino Foundation, Professor Vincent Anigbogu, urged INEC and security agencies to plan for the safety of internally displaced persons and persons with disabilities from the outset.
He said their protection should be an integral part of the electoral process.
The forum also urged the NSCDC to incorporate disability inclusion into its operational plans, training, deployment and emergency response.
Participants called for better communication and appropriate assistance that respects the dignity and independence of persons with disabilities.
