The European Union and the United Nations have renewed their strategic partnership to align humanitarian, development and peacebuilding efforts in support of Nigeria’s national priorities.
This was at a high-level EU-UN Strategic Partnership Meeting in Abuja.
Gathered at the UN House in Abuja are senior representatives of the United Nations and the European Union.
According to the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, the partnership goes beyond financial support.
The EU is one of the biggest supporters of the UN globally, and in Nigeria, that support translates into projects worth more than 400 million dollars a year.
Discussions also focused on shifting from traditional aid to sustainable, locally led solutions, strengthening protection for vulnerable populations, expanding access to education, clean energy and digital innovation, and empowering women, girls and youths.
The meeting was convened at a time when the international landscape is changing, with growing questions around multilateralism and international solidarity.
The EU and UN are currently implementing a portfolio of 32 projects worth more than half a billion dollars in Nigeria, working with 16 UN agencies.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing a strong belief in what they called a multilateralism that delivers for people facing challenges on the ground, and a commitment to further improve the delivery of projects to benefit Nigerians.
