Some students of the Federal University of Gusau who were said to have been expelled by the university’s management are appealing to the Minister of Education, Professor Mamman Tahir, traditional rulers, and other relevant stakeholders to wade into the issue.

The expelled students claimed that the university management decided to expel them following a peaceful protest which they staged to draw the attention of the management and the Federal Government to the incessant abduction of their colleagues at the Dambam and Sabon Gida Areas of Gusau and Bugundu Local Governments of Zamfara State.

They denied the claim of the university’s management that their protest was violent, pointing out that even when the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muazu Abubakar Gusau came to address them, they told him their grievances.

They also said the peaceful protest was not in any way to give the institution a bad name, but to get the university’s management to take the necessary security measures to protect them against the bandits.

The affected students want the university to reinstate them, as they did not commit any crime that would warrant the decision, and most of them are on the verge of graduating.

Among the expelled students include: Billy Gugas, a 400-level student of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology; Abdulsalam Abdulrazak Onimisi, a 300-level student of computer science; Thomas Zhiri, a 200-level student of computer science; Georgina Bulus, a 400-level student of education biology; and Prince Macdennis, a 300-level student of plant science.
