Former Kogi State Governor, Ibrahim Idris, has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 77.
The death was confirmed to AIT.live on Sunday by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed.
Further details surrounding his death were still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
Ibrahim Idris served as Governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2008 and again from 2008 to 2012 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP..
He was first elected Governor in 2003, defeating the then incumbent, Prince Abubakar Audu, and was sworn into office on May 29, 2003.
Idris was re-elected in 2007, but the election was later nullified by the courts following a legal challenge over the exclusion of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, candidate, Abubakar Audu.
The Court of Appeal upheld the nullification in February 2008 and ordered a fresh election.
Idris subsequently contested the March 2008 re-run and was returned as governor.
He completed his tenure in January 2012 and was succeeded by his brother-in-law, Captain Idris Wada.
Born in 1949 in Idah, Kogi State, Idris was a businessman before venturing into politics.
He founded Ibro Trading Company, with interests in areas including construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality.
He also established a furniture factory in Sokoto and the Ibro Hotel.
The former governor attracted national attention in 2006 when three of his daughters survived the ADC Airlines Flight 53 crash, which claimed several lives.
In April 2024, Idris suffered another family loss following the death of his son, Mohammed Ibrahim Idris, who was a former member of the House of Representatives representing Ankpa-Olamaboro-Omala Federal Constituency of Kogi State.
Mohammed died in Abuja shortly after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayers.
Ibrahim Idris served as Kogi State Governor for nearly nine years and remains one of the longest-serving governors in the state’s history.
