The 2nd edition of the Peter Aluma Memorial Intercollegiate Basketball Championship took place at the Warriors Basketball court in Ilupeju, Lagos at the weekend
The quadrangular competition involved – the University of Lagos, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State University, and the Lagos State University of Science & Technology (formerly Laspotech).
In the qualifying games for the finals, Unilag defeated LASU 42-36, while in the other game, Yabatech ground out a win over Laspotech 25-24. During the final game, which pitched two silver medalists (NUGA vs NIPOGA) against themselves, The Unilag team defeated the Yabatech team 28-23 to retain her title and also confirm her superiority as the elite collegiate team in the state.
Peter Olufemi Okiemute Aluma attended Okota Grammar School Isolo, Lagos, before leaving for the United States where he graduated with a Bachelors’s and Master’s degree in Business Administration from Liberty University.
Peter thereafter, had an illustrious basketball career with the multi championship winning Comets Basketball club before securing an athletic scholarship to study at Liberty University in America. At Liberty, he quickly racked up accolades: All-Conference Rookie team in 1994, Big South Conference Tournament MVP in 1994 and 1997, & an all-region selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1997.
For many years, Peter was an integral part of the Nigerian national basketball team and made appearances at the FIBA Basketball World Cup and multiple editions of the All-African Games. He went on to play briefly with the Sacramento Kings and was signed to the Phoenix Suns but waived in 1999.
He got an invitation to New York Knicks Summer League Team in 2000. He played professionally in Venezuela and Belarus and in 2001, played with the Harlem Globetrotters. Peter passed on, in Sacramento California on 2/2/2020 after a brief illness. The tournament is designed to encourage the Youth and the development of basketball in Nigeria
