Nigeria may soon return to an era when financial institutions were prominent participants in association football.
The Bankers League has been a consistent feature over the years, with this year’s competition concluding at the Sani Abacha Stadium, home ground of Kano Pillars, where FCMB emerged champions.
Former internationals Yusuf Ayinla and Benard Okorowanta began their professional football careers with the now-moribund Union Bank Football Club in the early 1990s. Like Union Bank, First Bank was also a prominent team in the top-tier league during the first decade of the 21st century.
The enthusiasm for association football among financial institutions has continued to grow, with the consistent organization of the Bankers League.
FCMB clinched the title for the third consecutive year in this year’s final at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
Organizers are looking to revive the era when financial institutions played a significant role in association football in Nigeria.
The benefits of physical exercise for performance in workplaces also dominated discussions at the finals of the competition.
