The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has urged primary school teachers in the FCT who embarked on strike over non-payment of salary arrears backlog and emoluments to return to classes within forty-eight hours.
One of resolutions reached after a meeting with the Minister, area council chairmen, and Leadership of the National Union of Local Government Employees FCT Wing, was the setting up of a committee that will exhaustively discuss the issues affecting teachers under the Local Education Authority with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem.
The leadership of the teachers’ union had in the first week of september directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the teachers’ entitlements including non-payment of its members’ 25-month promotion arrears and 40 percent peculiar allowance.
Also on the list of the teacher’s demand are the non-payment of outstanding allowances, the non-upgrading of teachers, the non-implementation of annual increments, and the non-implementation of promotion letters released to teachers.
After meeting with the union behind closed doors on Tuesday, the Minister of the federal capital territory, Nyesom wike disclosed that the administration has set up a committee to address the issues raised by the teachers
The Mandate secretary, Area Council Services secretariat, Bitrus Garki explained that the committee has two weeks to report back to the Minister
The FCT Minister expressed high hopes in the union and trust they will call off the strike to enable pupils return to classes as soon as possible.
