The Federal Government has called on Nigerians especially those in places of authority, public or private to ensure adequate provision of hand washing facilities within the reach of all citizenry.
Minister of state for Environment Iziaq Salako who made the call in Abuja at the commemoration of the Global Handwashing Day, said hand hygiene is an important element of infection control which can significantly reduce the risk of cross-transmission of infectious diseases.

Hands often act as agents that carry disease-causing pathogens from person to person, either through direct contact or indirectly via surfaces.
As Research has shown, hand washing helps in battling the rise of Antimicrobial Resistance, the greatest threats to global health, food security and development.
Minister of Environment represented by the acting permanent secretary, Charles Ikeah says the federal government is committed to ensuring that sufficient clean water and soap are available for hand washing at appropriate times.
Other speakers harped on the remarkable impact a seemingly simple act like proper hand washing can have on public health and overall wellbeing.
High point of the event was a practical demonstration of hand washing technique by the ministers and some students as well as presentation of medals to schools for outstanding performance in a quiz competition on hand hygiene and related matters.

It is celebrated every year on the 15th of October to increase awareness and understanding on the importance of hand washing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
