Recruitment scams and common application mistakes are costing many Nigerians opportunities to secure federal government jobs. Authorities have now issued fresh guidance to help applicants avoid costly errors.
The Federal Government has identified seven common mistakes many Nigerians make when applying for government jobs, warning that these errors could significantly reduce their chances of securing employment.
The warning was issued by the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in a public awareness message published on its website. The commission stressed that it does not recruit for ministries, departments or agencies but monitors compliance with the Federal Character Principle in federal recruitment.
With thousands of Nigerians seeking federal government jobs, the commission said many applicants unknowingly undermine their chances by:
applying through unverified or unofficial sources;
paying individuals who claim they can influence government recruitment;
ignoring application requirements;
missing application deadlines;
submitting incorrect or false information;
failing to prepare for the stages that follow the application; and
assuming every advertised vacancy is genuine.
The FCC particularly warned applicants to beware of fake recruitment websites, social media posts and forwarded messages, noting that fraudsters often create fake job advertisements to exploit desperate job seekers.
It advised applicants to verify all recruitment information through official government websites and platforms before submitting applications or personal details.
The commission also cautioned Nigerians never to pay anyone who claims to have influence over government recruitment, stressing that genuine recruitment into federal institutions does not require payment to any individual.
