The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, says about 95% of complaints relating to rights violations involve women.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, made this known at the State Consultative Meeting on the National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Kaduna, North-West Nigeria.
The National Action Plan serves as a framework for promoting and protecting human rights in line with international standards and Nigeria’s constitutional provisions.
The consultative meeting brought together stakeholders to strengthen collaboration among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as civil society organisations, towards effective implementation of the plan.
Representing the Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Coordinator of NHRC, Terngu Gwar, said many Nigerians are still unaware of the National Action Plan and its objectives.
He noted that a large percentage of complaints received by the Commission relate to violations against women, stressing the need for increased sensitisation and protection of vulnerable groups.
The Commission says the 2024–2028 National Action Plan is expected to strengthen efforts towards building a more inclusive and rights-respecting society across the country.
