The Federal Government has constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the reported deaths of 37 people in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State, North-Central Nigeria.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the probe follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The Minister has also ordered the suspension of all officers involved, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The committee will investigate the arrests and detention of the deceased, determine the cause and circumstances of their deaths, and establish responsibility where necessary.

It has two weeks to complete its assignment and submit its report.
Meanwhile, 20 additional NSCDC officers have been suspended alongside the Niger State Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye.
Tunji-Ojo commiserated with the families of the deceased and appealed for calm as the investigation continues.
