Several residential buildings have been submerged in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital following a heavy downpour that lasted for about four hours.
The development comes weeks after the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet, predicted possible flash floods in Nasarawa State and other parts of the country as a result of heavy rainfall.
Some of the flood victims, who recounted their losses, called on the state government to intervene urgently, as many affected residents are left counting their losses.
The Managing Director of the Nasarawa Urban Development Agency, NUDA, Mohammed Wada, told AIT that Governor Abdullahi Sule has directed the immediate upgrading of urban development and city centres across the state.

Wada says the upgrade will provide additional waterways and improve drainage systems in line with the state’s city development plan, with a view to preventing further loss of lives and destruction of property caused by flooding and other natural disasters.
He described the damage caused by the flood as avoidable, stressing the need for residents to adhere strictly to government warnings and guidelines against constructing buildings without the necessary approvals.
