Federal, States and Local Governments authorities have been urged to stop all spendings for now and focus on Agriculture development and tackling insecurity in farming communities.

Small-Scale Women Farmers who called on government to bring back the growth enhancement support scheme at a press conference in Abuja also want the authorities to declare state of emergency on security in Nigeria.

In light of the escalating economic challenges, the concurrent food crisis and high food inflation, Small-Scale Women Farmers organization of Nigeria, SWOFON says it is imperative to highlight the severe effects of insecurity on farming communities and small-holder women farmers across the country.

They called on Federal and State Governments to as a matter of urgency bring back the “Growth Enhancement and Support Scheme, GESS” that would provide subsidies to support smallholder farmers especially women to easily access inputs such as quality early maturing seeds, seedlings, feeds, organic fertilizers and pesticides.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu in July 2023 declared state of emergency on food security, eight months down the line the situation persists unabated. The women farmers are therefore drawing the attention of Nigerian Government on the impact of the current economic hardship, and high Inflation on smallholder women farmers across the country, urging that government at all levels must take urgent action to ensure farmers get back to farm.
