Former President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Williams Akporeha, has urged President Bola Tinubu to begin preparations for a new national minimum wage.
He wants the President to inaugurate a tripartite committee promptly when a formal request is submitted, to ensure the review takes place within the three-year timeframe.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Working People United consultation meeting, Akporeha said early preparations were necessary to ensure a timely review of workers’ pay.
Akporeha, who is the group’s National Coordinator, urged President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly on a request to inaugurate a tripartite minimum wage committee.
He said workers and retirees were feeling the effects of government policies and needed measures to ease the pressure on their incomes.
Akporeha urged the President to demonstrate the same urgency shown in approving the seventy-thousand-naira minimum wage when considering a new pay structure.
He also welcomed the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative but urged those managing it to expand access.
Akporeha said wider availability would help workers, retirees and their families benefit from the initiative.
