The All Progressives Congress in Gombe StateGombe APC Adopts Direct Primaries After Consensus Talks Collapse will adopt direct primaries for the upcoming elections.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya announced this after party stakeholders failed to reach a total consensus.
Speaking at a security meeting in Government House, the Governor also issued a stern warning against political violence.
The APC had initially pushed for consensus candidates to foster internal party unity in line with the new amendments to the Electoral Act 2026.
But that’s when the politicking started as the state executive committee and party elders immediately began work to convince several aspirants to step down.
However, reaching a complete consensus has been a challenge due to disagreements from a few remaining aspirants.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya has now called for direct primaries as the only viable path forward.
The Governor also defended direct primaries as a highly democratic selection process, noting that it gives every registered party member a voice in choosing flagbearers.
Turning to security, Yahaya warned politicians against deploying thugs to disrupt the state. He emphasized that no political ambition is worth compromising the safety of Gombe residents.
The state has planned to step up security deployment to maintain peace before, during, and after primaries.
