Gombe State has intensified its public health response following a cholera outbreak in Billiri Local Government Area and concerns over Ebola after the declaration of an outbreak in Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Adamu-Danladi Bojude, says the state is strengthening surveillance and emergency preparedness to protect residents.
Two people died following reports of diarrhoea and vomiting in Kedo village, Todi Ward, Billiri Local Government Area, on October 4.
The Commissioner for Health says 74 patients have been treated and discharged, with no active admission as of Wednesday.
Bojude says the state deployed a Rapid Response Team to support local health workers and provide free treatment at the Primary Health Centre in Sheila.
He adds that Gombe had recorded seven consecutive days without a new case as of October 21, raising hopes that the outbreak could be declared over by October 24 if no further cases emerge.
On Ebola, the commissioner says the state is strengthening its emergency response following the federal government’s announcement of an outbreak in Nigeria involving a person who arrived from Uganda.
The state government says the measures are aimed at strengthening disease surveillance, improving early detection and ensuring a coordinated response to potential public health emergencies.
