The Enugu State Government has distributed farm inputs to about 63,000 smallholder farmers across the State, to boost food production this farming season.

At the ceremony held at Okpara Square, Governor Peter Mbah says one of the ways his administration is tackling insecurity is through food security.

The exercise is the third time in a row of farming seasons under the Governor Peter Mbah administration, with thousands of farmers receiving free agricultural inputs, ranging from fertilisers and agrochemicals to improved rice, maize, pepper and tomato seeds.

While the programme has become an annual intervention, the number of beneficiaries continues to grow as this year records over 63,000 farmers who are selected from communities across the State’s 260 wards.

Governor Mbah said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to fighting poverty by improving agricultural productivity and expanding opportunities for rural farmers.

The Governor told a large crowd that the State’s current agricultural output is still below expectation, stressing that government is investing in research, technology and value addition to transform agriculture into a profitable business, while encouraging young people to see the sector beyond subsistence farming.
