Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has flagged off the construction of a 5-star International Conference Centre Hotel in Enugu City, stating that the project is a key enabler in realizing the goal of making Enugu the premier destination for tourism.

The groundbreaking ceremony is taking place barely two weeks after the State Executive Council approved the contract award of the landmark project.

A five-star represents the highest level of distinction awarded to hotels offering luxury in every aspect, from its interior design and amenities to its services.

That is the vision, the Enugu State government intends to bring to life at the East side premises of the ongoing International Conference Center construction site in the highbrow Independence Layout, Enugu city.

The location is less than five kilometers from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Enugu, and at the cosmopolitan axis of city centre, sharing ariel view with the Lion building and the famous Michael Okpara Square.

Governor Peter Mbah, at the flag-off ceremony, emphasized the strategic nature of the project.

He disclosed that by April 2025, the 5-star hotel should be ready for commissioning.

Since the project’s announcement, it has raised questions from various quarters on government’s involvement in business and the fate of other government hospitality structures like the Nike Lake Resort, and the moribund Presidential Hotel.

Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Tourism Board, Rita Mbah, provides clarifications.

When completed, the five-star hotel will be one of the first in Southeast Nigeria and is seen as a game-changer towards restoring the tourist appeal of Enugu State.
