Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has approved the procurement of fertilizers for the 2026 farming season and introduced a subsidy aimed at reducing production costs and improving farmers’ productivity across the state.
Under the initiative, a 50kg bag of fertilizer will be sold to farmers at ₦20,000, significantly lower than the current market price of between ₦50,000 and ₦53,000.
According to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, the state government has procured about 500 truckloads of fertilizer for distribution to farmers across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas.
The government said the intervention is designed to ensure farmers have timely access to quality farming inputs, boost food production, enhance profitability, and strengthen food security in the state.
Governor Mutfwang described agriculture as a key pillar of his administration’s development agenda, noting that the subsidy was introduced in response to concerns over the rising cost of farming inputs.
He said the programme is expected to lower production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers’ profit margins, and support sustainable agricultural development.
The Governor also stated that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Agricultural objectives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and complements efforts to address economic challenges through increased food production.
Although the official launch of the 2026 Fertilizer Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, July 10, 2026, Governor Mutfwang has directed that the sale of the subsidized fertilizer begin immediately to enable farmers take advantage of the ongoing planting season.
He urged farmers across the state to take full advantage of the programme, assuring them of his administration’s continued commitment to policies that promote agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods, and position Plateau State as the hub for agriculture and agribusiness.
