Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu

Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu has raised fresh concerns over growing security threats along Nigeria’s borders, warning of illegal resource exploitation and increasing pressure from regional instability.

The governor made this known while receiving a delegation from the Strategic Intelligence Management Institute, SIMI, at Government House Calabar, where discussions focused on intelligence-driven governance and the urgent need for stronger border security frameworks.

The governor described the Pstate as strategically exposed, due to its extensive international and maritime boundaries.

He also disclosed that foreign actors are engaged in illegal extraction of resources along the state’s coastline, warning that the situation poses both economic risks and serious national security concerns.

Earlier, the Provost of the Institute, Jadesohola Adesuyi, said the visit was part of a study tour focused on emerging regional security dynamics and the need for new policy responses, particularly in border management.

The visit reinforces the urgent need for intelligence-driven policies and stronger collaboration between government and security institutions, as border states like Cross River continue to navigate the direct impact of shifting regional security realities
