Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, says Nigeria’s political independence must translate into self reliance, human dignity and improved living conditions for its citizens.
He says 66 years after independence, the country’s progress should be measured by how well Nigerians are able to meet their needs and determine their future.
Otu spoke in his Independence Day message at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, where he was represented by his Deputy, Peter Odey.
The Governor said independence should go beyond freedom from external rule to building a country where citizens can determine their destiny, protect their dignity and rely on institutions that meet their aspirations.
He identified patriotism, integrity, self reliance and religious tolerance as values required to build a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
Otu said the true measure of independence is ultimately the quality of life it delivers to the people, rather than political freedom alone.
