Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the ongoing reconstruction and reactivation of the Kafin Chiri Dam in Garko Local Government Area of the state.

The governor made the commendation during an inspection visit to the project site, where he expressed optimism that the restored facility will expand irrigation farming and boost year-round agricultural production.

In Kano, agriculture is more than a source of food.

For many communities, farming is a livelihood, a tradition and a major source of household income.

Despite the state’s semi-arid climate and limited rainfall, farmers have continued to rely on irrigation to produce crops, particularly during the dry season.

One of the facilities supporting this agricultural activity is the Kafin Chiri Dam in Garko Local Government Area.

The dam has provided water for irrigation and other agricultural activities over the years, but deterioration of the facility disrupted its full potential.

Now, the Federal Government’s intervention with the state government support is bringing renewed hope to farming communities around the dam.

Reconstruction and reactivation work is currently at advanced stage, with the aim of restoring the dam’s capacity to support irrigation and strengthen agricultural production.

During his inspection visit, Governor Abba Yusuf commended the pace of work and expressed optimism that the project, when completed, will give farmers greater access to water throughout the year.

With a storage capacity of about 31.12 million cubic metres, Kafin Chiri Dam has significant potential for irrigation development.

Governor Yusuf says improved access to irrigation water will enable farmers to cultivate more land and increase production, including rice, which he described as one of the area’s major agricultural products.

For farmers, the significance of the dam goes beyond water storage.

Reliable irrigation can mean longer farming seasons, reduced dependence on rainfall and lower costs for farmers who otherwise rely on fuel-powered pumps.
