Every edition of Carnival Calabar begins with a theme – a single idea that inspires the costumes, shapes the performances, drives the competition, and ultimately tells the story of Africa’s Biggest Street Party.

For the 2026 edition, that story is: “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.”

For over two decades, Carnival Calabar has transformed from a tourism initiative into one of Africa’s most celebrated cultural events, attracting visitors, investors, and performers from around the world.

Now, Governor Bassey Otu says the 2026 theme is a call to reflect on shared aspirations while harnessing the power of culture, tourism, and creativity to drive economic growth and social progress.

At the unveiling ceremony attended by diplomats, tourism stakeholders, corporate sponsors and cultural enthusiasts in Lagos, the Nigerian economic capital, the Cross River State Governor described the annual Carnival Calabar theme announcement as the official commencement of preparations for the next festival season.

The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, says the festival is one of Nigeria’s most treasured cultural assets, expressing confidence that the 2026 edition would further project the country’s creativity, hospitality and cultural richness to the world.

From drawing boards to dance rehearsals, from costume studios to carnival camps, the journey to the actual show in December 2026 is officially underway.
