The Civil Society Coalition in Zamfara State has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to prioritise security planning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coalition’s representative, Ibrahim Tulu, made the call during a stakeholders’ meeting at INEC’s headquarters in Gusau.
The meeting focused on election preparations and the collection of Permanent Voter Cards.
The Independent National Electoral Commission says the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration exercise in Zamfara State recorded 313,115 registrations as of August 2026.
The figure is equivalent to 16.04 per cent of the state’s registered voters for the 2023 general elections.
INEC says conducting the 2027 general elections successfully in Zamfara will require careful planning, adequate resources and effective coordination among security agencies.
Stakeholders also raised concerns about electoral participation by internally displaced persons forced to flee their communities because of insecurity.
They called for the inclusion of persons with disabilities and measures to address other barriers to voter participation.
Zamfara State has 14 local government areas, 147 voter registration centres and 3,529 polling units.
Based on the 2023 election figures, each polling unit had an average of approximately 553 registered voters.
As preparations continue, stakeholders say addressing insecurity and ensuring that displaced people and persons with disabilities can vote will be critical to the conduct of the elections.
