England captain Harry Kane has committed his future to Bayern Munich, signing a new contract that will keep him at the German champions until 2029 and strengthen hopes of further success at club and international levels.
The 33-year-old striker joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2023 for a reported £86 million and has since established himself as one of the club’s most influential players. Kane has scored 102 goals in 102 Bundesliga appearances, winning two league titles and three consecutive Golden Boot awards.
His decision to extend his stay in Germany raises questions about whether he will return to the Premier League before the end of his career. Kane left Tottenham as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances, but he still has some distance to cover to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals.
Kane scored 213 goals in 320 Premier League appearances for Tottenham, leaving him 47 short of Shearer’s landmark. With his new Bayern deal running until shortly before his 36th birthday, surpassing the record could prove increasingly difficult.
However, former England striker Chris Sutton believes Kane can continue playing at the highest level for several more years, pointing to his football intelligence, finishing ability and all-round contribution.
Sutton also believes the new contract could benefit England coach Thomas Tuchel, with Kane potentially remaining a key figure for the national team at Euro 2028, which will be hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup could also remain a possibility, depending on Kane’s fitness and form. The tournament will be staged across Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with centenary matches scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
Kane remains England’s record goalscorer, with 91 international goals in 125 appearances. His continued development at Bayern will be encouraging for Tuchel, particularly as England seek to end their long wait for a major international trophy.
Although Kane’s age and the demands of elite football make his long-term international future uncertain, his performances in Germany suggest he still has plenty to offer as he targets more silverware with Bayern and England.
