There was tension in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, Tuesday as suspected gunmen launched a daring broad daylight attack on policemen who were on a stop and search operation.
The incident occurred along the Abakaliki – Enugu expressway, around a popular build-up area known as G-Hostel.
The State Police Command spokesman, SP Chris Anyanwu has confirmed the incident, describing it as a surprise attack.
Anyanwu said two policemen received bullet injuries in the attack, while one of the armed men was gunned down.

The body of the deceased gunman was Tuesday evening brought to the Police headquarters, alongside some items said to have been recovered from him.
Anywanwu explained that the suspected hoodlums were heading to neighboring Enugu State with a Sienna bus and a motorbike, but opened fire on getting to the Police checkpoint.
