For families repeatedly displaced by flooding along the Benue River Basin, years of uncertainty are giving way to permanent resettlement as the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, N-HYPPADEC, hands over newly built homes to affected communities.
The housing scheme forms part of the Commission’s wider flood resilience and resettlement programme.
For many communities in Buruku and Guma Local Government Areas, seasonal flooding has become a recurring humanitarian crisis, destroying homes, farmland and livelihoods.
That cycle is beginning to change for twenty displaced families following the handover of newly completed housing units under the first phase of a sixty-three-unit resettlement project supported by the Federal Government.
Representing the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Director of Finance and Administration, Dr. Haruna Jimoh Gabi, said the Commission is committed to providing lasting solutions that restore dignity while reducing the impact of recurring floods on vulnerable communities.
Representing Governor Hyacinth Alia, Secretary to the State Government, Serumun Deborah Aber, commended the intervention and assured beneficiaries that the allocation process would be concluded quickly to enable immediate occupation.
Community leaders welcomed the project, saying it will improve living conditions and complement existing public facilities, while urging sustained investment in security and other basic services.
The remaining housing units are expected to be completed in subsequent phases, alongside healthcare, water and clean energy projects, as N-HYPPADEC expands its intervention across flood-prone communities.
