The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the introduction of a hybrid payment system at Airport access gates across the country.

The directive follows the earlier suspension of the full cashless payment system ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a reaction to the viral exclusive report by AIT’s aviation correspondent, Onoshiorena Obozeghie, that captured the traffic gridlock and passengers’ frustration at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s entrance.

In a statement by the Special Adviser On Media and Communications to the Minister, Tunde Moshood, the decision was reached at the minister’s meeting with officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and senior ministry officials to review the challenges observed during the initial implementation.

Under the new arrangement, both cash and card payments will be accepted at airport access gates, starting from March 13, 2026.

Motorists who already have the FAAN Go Cashless Card can continue to use it, while other electronic payment options, such as POS terminals and approved digital channels, will also remain available.

The Ministry says the hybrid system will remain in place while it works with concessionaires to introduce a fully automated electronic payment system at airport access gates in the future.
