The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai Chapter, has conditionally suspended its more than one month old strike following talks with the Niger State Government.
The decision was reached after a congress of the union, with Chapter Chairman, Galadima Bala, stressing that the industrial action has only been suspended conditionally.
Speaking after the congress, Bala said the decision was taken in consideration of the impact of the prolonged strike on students and their parents, as well as the union’s engagement with the state government.
He said the suspension would allow further discussions on outstanding issues, with the union expecting commitments reached with the government to be fulfilled.
Bala said the congress decision is binding on members and urged academic staff to begin preparations to return to their duty posts.
He clarified that ASUU did not direct students to leave the university and would therefore not determine their return, saying arrangements for students’ resumption are the responsibility of the university management.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, is expected to review the academic calendar to account for the period lost to the strike.
A university official says management will revise the 2025/2026 academic calendar and communicate the new schedule to students.
